I would not recommend playing for this coach. She has knowledge and passion for the game but never directed it in an effective way. In no way did she have a connection with our team. It was very much coach vs. the rest of the program. She did not know how to connect with us. We knew nothing about her personally, and she thought knowing one of our hobbies was equal to knowing us outside of volleyball. No one on our team really respected her, because she continuously gave us reasons not to. People on campus didn't like her either. She was not good at the whole people thing. Was she the worst person ever? No. But there were numerous times where our team could have benefited and gone the extra mile if we had someone who we wanted to play for. But no one did. She was the most organized yet disorganized person I have met. She just tried really hard to focus and fix the wrong things. It was never efficient. Her corrections changed by the day, which was very confusing for our team. One day she yells because your feet are too wide; the next day they're too narrow. One day she yells becuase she thinks you're not engaged, the next it's "you're too much". Everyone was walking on eggshells, and it was hard to naturally be yourself. Questioning what you were doing all the time was a common way of thinking my team adapted due to her unstable coaching methods. She just was not the leader we needed, and we suffered because of it.

Coach Long was an excellent coach for me. I am realizing now, a few years out, that she wasn't just pushing us to be our best selves on the court; she was also preparing us for real life after college. She is a coach who always expects more of you and is very direct with what she wants and doesn't want. In the recruiting process, she was very honest about how her coaching style was, so I knew what to expect. She has many years of experience to back up her wealth of knowledge about the game, but you could see each of the 4 years she was tweaking things and trying new things to reach the team we had that year and create the culture needed. This includes mentally and physically. Her athletes mean a lot to her, and she puts the effort into to athletes to excel not only on the court but also in the classroom. She also held meetings often to go over performance on and off the court, and that is where I feel like she really prepared us for real life, as I got used to critically evaluating my performance and getting better at what to expect come performance review time in the workplace. I couldn't recommend her more to student-athletes who want to grow on and off the court.

This woman is actually crazy. Would not recommend every considering playing for her no matter if she gives you a full scholarship or not. She is mentally and emotionally abusive. Your child's college experience will be ruined. She broke up friendships and threatened to take their playing time away if they didn't obey. She is a sociopath.

    Cool

I have never played for a worse coach. She is manipulative and will ruin your child's view of the sport. She is a bully that gets away with it because the Athletic Directors wife was her college coach. She bullies people to the point of depression. She brainwashes her team and her assistant to target the people she is bullying. Convincing liar.

I transferred to another school due to the toxicity that was brought with the program. They very much have the mean girl mentality with sharing the same interest as them. Nobody takes responsibility and blames everything on others. If she says she cares about education she really doesn’t along with the rest of the team. If you want a positive atmosphere DO NOT COME HERE, they just complain about everything and everyone. If you are injured or get injured under her she will give up on you and will never ask how you are doing or even care if you are making progress because she already plans for you to sit the bench or to leave. After going there, I had to receive counseling for PTSD because of how mentally and verbally abusive the whole program is. Mental health is “not real” in this program so SAVE YOURSELF!
