After swimming with Mason during my entire collegiate career, I grew significantly as a swimmer and person. My times got faster, I grew more confident inside and outside of the water, and felt incredibly prepared to take on life post grad. Mason was always supportive of me and listened to my thoughts about training and competition. We collaborated to align on what works best for me - and it worked! I always looked forward to practice, and never hesitated to talk to Mason after races. He understood how to communicate with me, whether I had the best race of my life or was going through a rough patch. He fostered a team culture that I’m happy to be a part of. If I was in high school again, I would chose OU all over again. His actions during my time showed he has a character that I greatly respect, and would happily have him as my coach again.

    Poor Communication

He did not train his recruits well in some events, giving them a student coach who had never completed at the collegiate level, withheld his athlete's legal and financial rights from them, pretending he wasn't sure or was actually ignorant of the NCAA legal protections in place, spread lies and false assumptions about his athletes to attack them when he'd put them and their families in financially and emotionally precarious situations, and actually set out to harm his athletes rather than take care of them. He ignored his athletes when they emailed him with questions, ghosting them with a refusal to honestly answer questions about their finances and legal rights. He acted in his own best interest and against the best interests of his athletes. He caused great distress with his dishonesty and complete lack of any qualities one would want in a coach. He is morally bankrupt and did not coach many of his athletes well, nor did he show any care for their academic and emotional well-being. The team culture he presented to recruits was a deception and, now, several of his athletes live in fear. He does not invest in and develop athletes as a rule anymore; he uses those he can to maximize his income and opportunities.

    Old School MentalityPoor Communication

This coach is only interested in himself and his goals. He clearly states academics are not important and encourages practice over attending classes if there is a schedule conflict. He does not care at all for the mental health of the athletes and his comments have a demeaning undertone toward women. Not the type of coach that is a leader for young athletes.

    Poor Communication

If you like a coach that is a self-proclaimed liar this is your team. If you like a coach that cares about his opportunities to succeed more than the swimmers' opportunities to succeed, then this is your team. If you like a coach that ignores injuries and sickness of swimmers, then this is your team. If you like a coach that thinks academics are not important then this is your team. Otherwise, run far, far away!

    DisorganizedPoor Communication

The OU athletic department values coaches more than its own student-athletes. Head Coach, Mason Norman, puts no value on the "student" aspect of "student-athlete". Ohio University Women's Swimming&Diving coaching staff is deceitful and manipulative.
