A primary indicator of a program’s health, culture, and ultimate effectiveness is how many players leave and why. The HPU women’s lacrosse team is losing 20 players this year. All but 3 players in the sophomore class are leaving and 10 out of 15 in the freshman class have either been cut, are leaving because their scholarships were taken, or are choosing to transfer because they are unhappy. Coach Boswell’s coaching style is an unfortunate combination of desperation (with a singular focus on winning the Big South Championship), and intimidation. That combined with her ignorance of proper nutrition for athletes, and rejection of proper training and recovery parameters set by the NCAA put players’ mental and physical health at risk. I implore anyone who is considering sending their daughter to High Point to run in the opposite direction. I wish we were alerted to the toxic atmosphere and instability of the program before committing.
