Do not come to Michigan rowing. Mark is probably the most unqualified for this coaching position. He does not care about the team as a whole concerning the athletes, he just cares about who will kiss up to him the most. He is hypocritical and does not have a method at all to his coaching, how he makes lineups, or how he has the team train. He has wasted a lot of potential and put athletes through mental agony, making the sport someone once loved become a chore, toxic, and not fun. He doesn’t rely on numbers or seat race results; instead he will choose someone slower essentially (2 of my teammates won their seat races and then were sent home after Big Tens). It is devastating and frustrating to witness and personally experience the failure of a team he has created due to his incompetencies. He has let down the team and many talented athletes in so many heartbreaking ways that is unacceptable. Compliance doesn’t care either. No one cares about women’s rowing. They are hypocritical. They don’t want to change anything or listen to our feedback. Very poor leadership. Toxic culture. Do not come here. You will be very unhappy. Go somewhere else. Trust.

Favoritism, poor leadership & communication, toxic culture, inept, unqualified, doesn’t care about mental health. Do not row for women’s UMich team.

Athletes not developed beyond the team. Practices always scheduled to conflict with all other possible benefits of being part of a big athletic department (career services, networking, etc) Mark coaches the same 8 athletes all year, period. Seems charming but in fact is antisocial. Cares almost exclusively about erg scores.

Claims to want to develop team beyond rowing, but doesn't do anything to help that and barely leaves any extra time for professional development outside of practice and class time. Fosters a toxic erg culture.

Mark is very direct, accessible, and honest with his team while creating a great team culture. He cares about his players and also keeps his team environment super light while emphasizing that work needs to be done. He is a great coach.

Mark Rothstein cares about Michigan Rowing more than anything (other than his family). He is very open to feedback. That doesn't mean he will necessarily change but he will hear you out.

Mark is a very good coach. He doesn’t take himself too seriously which is great because his primary focus is on the team, which he takes very seriously. Mark is also very honest about the potential he sees in people and knows a lot about the sport. Although he might come off as silly at first, he really does know what he’s talking about and sincerely wants what’s best for the team.

Mark is the best rowing coach in the nation. He is honest and fair, and if you put in the effort to build a relationship with him, it is beyond valuable. I have learned so much from him, and I am so grateful for the lessons he gave me about rowing and life.

Mark values the team but can be very individually focused at times on certain athletes. It can be hard to know exactly what he wants from an athlete but he is very good at motivating.
